The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is empowered to inquire into allegations of race, sex, disability and age discrimination in specific areas of public life. The Commission may also investigate alleged breaches of human rights by federal governments and allegations of specific types of discrimination in the area of employment and occupation on grounds such as trade union activity, criminal record, political opinion, social origin, medical record, age or sexual preference. The Commission's responsibilities include: education and public awareness discrimination and human rights complaints human rights compliance policy and legislative development. We do this through: resolving complaints of discrimination or breaches of human rights under federal laws holding public inquiries into issues of national importance
