The role of Public and Environmental Health is to monitor the health of the Tasmanian population, and put in place programs to protect or promote health. Public and Environmental Health Service does much of this work directly,and also works collaboratively with other states and Commonwealth government agencies, local governments, health care providers, community groups and the private sector.

As a part of Project Samaritan, Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) volunteers have been specially trained by Tasmania Police to visit residential burglary victims and provide additional advice about: property marking; low cost measures to reduce the risk of burglary; and the benefits of security devices (e.g. locks, sensor lights and security alarms)
