Commonwealth Carer Respite Centre provides flexible short term respite on ad hoc basis and emergency respite for people with moderate to profound disabilities. Service also provides information and referral to other services especially those providing ongoing respite. Paid carers are not eligible for this assistance. For people with a disability who are eligible for aged care accommodation (ACAT assessment and currency of assessment form ACCR required) the Carer Respite Centre provides the Residential Respite Booking Service for Newcastle Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens Lower and Upper Hunter. As at June 1. 2003 the program has received funding to provide services to Carers of people with dementia, dementia with challenging behaviour, with terminal illness (support palliative care services) and frail older people over 65 years in their own homes. The Ageing Carers Packages are available to carers not receiving other services.

Provides respite for families through quality care for children 0-18 years. The child receiving the care has an opportuniy to enjoy an extended family, have their own special friend and to participate in the broader community. All caregivers are trained and receive ongoing support including visits from staff and professionals while child is in care. Respite may be accessed as regular breaks of a few hours a week, a couple of days per week, overnight, holiday care and in family emergencies. Users of the service are required to pay a contribution towards the cost of the care. Costs vary but may be as low $2 per hour for some respite.

Norma Parker Respite Centre (located at Lakemba) provides centre-based respite for up to 4 clients at a time. During their stay there are opportunities for leisure and recreation activities both at the centre and in the community. Respite can be provided on weekends, public holidays and a two week block over the Christmas/New Year period. Prority is given to ageing or single carers, clients at risk of institutional care, carer/clients from NESB backgrounds & ATSI, carers/clients with insufficient services to meet their needs and carers/clients living in the Inner West. Respite is available Friday night to Monday morning - Intake is from 3pm Friday and discharge is 9am Monday morning.
